When a business decides its customers need a portal, the first question is usually “should it be an app?” Often the better question is “what do our customers actually need to do, and where will they be when they do it?”

Both web apps and mobile apps can be excellent. They just suit different jobs. Here’s how we help clients choose.

What a web app does best

A web app runs in the browser, on any device, with nothing to install. For most customer portals that’s a big advantage:

  • No download barrier. Customers click a link and they’re in, which matters when they only visit occasionally.
  • One product everywhere. The same portal works on desktop, tablet and phone.
  • Instant updates. Every improvement is live for everyone the moment it ships, with no app store review.
  • Easier to find. Public pages can be indexed by search engines.

If your customers log in to check an account, download documents, submit a request or pay an invoice, a well-built responsive web app is usually the right call.

When a mobile app earns its place

A native or cross-platform mobile app makes sense when the phone itself is part of the experience:

  • Frequent, habitual use. Something people open several times a week benefits from living on the home screen.
  • Device features. Camera, GPS, biometrics, offline access or background tracking all work best natively.
  • Push notifications that customers genuinely want, such as delivery updates or approvals.
  • Field work. Drivers, technicians and staff on the move need something fast and reliable, even with a weak signal.

The questions we ask first

  • How often will customers use it: daily, weekly, or a few times a year?
  • Do they need anything the phone does that a browser can’t?
  • Will they be at a desk, on the move, or both?
  • How important is it to ship improvements quickly?
  • What does it need to connect to behind the scenes?

The answers usually make the decision for you.

You don’t always have to choose

Many of the platforms we build start as a web app and add a mobile app later, sharing the same back end, data and business logic. Customers get a portal immediately, and the app arrives once usage shows where it adds real value. Modern progressive web apps can also be installed to the home screen and send notifications, closing much of the gap for lighter use cases.

The part that matters most is underneath

Whichever front end you choose, the real work is the platform behind it: secure accounts, clean integrations with your existing systems, and data that stays consistent everywhere. Get that right and adding another channel later is straightforward.
